CHAFFCOMBE
Chaffcombe is a small rural parish (c200) just north of the A30 and east of Chard. Together with its satellite hamlets of Chaffcombe Gate and Lydmarsh, it has no shop, school, pub or public transport links. However, what it does have is a vibrant and caring community with a great sense of identity. Parishioners are largely but not exclusively of retirement age, but all are active in their support of the village.
The hub of the village activities is the central Village Hall which was recently enlarged and updated by the efforts of the local community. It hosts village coffee mornings, lunches, sports and craft groups, and music events. These are well-supported by the community and raise funds for the church and for other local and national causes.
Formerly dedicated to St. Michael alone, the church stands at the eastern end of the Parish, set back well above the road. It is built of ashlar and has a chancel with north vestry, nave with north aisle and south porch, and west tower. The body of the church was rebuilt to the designs of J. M. Allen in 1859, the north vestry added in 1877, and the tower largely reconstructed in 1882. The nave and chancel of the old church were probably 14th century or earlier, and the three-stage tower was added in the early 16th century.
A place of sacred beauty, living faith, and centuries of local heritage
Perched above the road at the eastern edge of the parish, the Church of St Michael and All Angels stands proud, its ashlar stone walls rising gracefully into the sky. This peaceful church has served the community for many centuries and continues to be a place of worship, reflection, and local pride.
We hope your visit to the Church of St Michael and All Angels has been meaningful. Whether you come for prayer, history, or curiosity, may you leave touched by the quiet beauty and rich heritage of this special place.
