The Two Shires Benefice was formed twenty years ago, bringing together five rural parishes. Although each parish serves its local community with its own ‘flavour’ and unique characteristics, we share much in common:
· a desire to worship God, expressed in many different ways
· a desire to serve our communities, both practically and spiritually
· a desire to help those in need, both locally and abroad
· a desire to draw others to Christ by word, deed and example
· a desire to treasure our history whilst living in the present and planning for the future
The Benefice is part of the Somerset South Deanery in the Diocese of Bath and Wells. The Rev Simon Hill is the Archdeacon of Taunton and the Rt Rev Michael Beasley is the Bishop of the Bath and Wells diocese.
Only a short distance from the Jurassic Coast, the Two Shires Benefice is a rural benefice of five parishes set in the picturesque landscape of the Somerset and Dorset Borders, with four of the parishes located within Somerset and one just over the border in Dorset. We are blessed to have beautiful traditional churches in all of our parishes, and all are most welcome to visit.

Church Organization
Benefice churchwardens meeting
There is a joint meeting of the churchwardens from each church every two months, to discuss common issues, plan benefice-wide events, and co-ordinate individual church plans.
CHAFFCOMBE
An active and engaged PCC of 5 comprising: Churchwarden, assistant to the churchwarden, treasurer, secretary/safeguarding officer, organist. Lay participation is encouraged by the PCC - evensong is frequently lay-led and there are volunteer readers, cleaners, refreshment-providers, flower-arrangers, churchyard-tidiers and so on. Bellringers and organist for all services.
CRICKET MALHERBIE
We have a small Parochial Parish Council of four members plus the incumbent as Chair. We meet at least four times per year usually at Manor Farm Cottage, the Churchwardens’ home. We work well together with the common purpose to maintain our church, keep the door open and provide fellowship opportunities within our community. The APCM is held in the church and we produce a handbook of reports which meets all the legal requirements of the PCC including a detailed financial account.
TATWORTH
Tatworth has a new PCC of five members, including secretary, treasurer, PSO, and acting churchwarden. We meet every two months, or as required, and in between work closely with each other to ensure the smooth running of the church. We have a good mix of abilities, from practical, secretarial, financial and organisational, to lay leadership, community connections and pastoral care. We work well together as a team, recognising the importance and value of each person’s abilities in making up the whole Body of Christ. We are dedicated to strengthening our community connections to reach those in need and those on the fringes of faith. We actively look for ways to use our Church and facilities to draw people in.
THORNCOMBE
The Parochial Church Council comprises 9 members. There is active participation in church maintenance by several residents who rarely attend church, e.g. flower arranging, weekly cleaning, and `odd jobs’.There is a guitar group although numbers have dwindled in recent years. There is an enthusiastic group of bell ringers, who ring weekly before services, and to mark special events in the church and national life. There are frequent visits by other teams to the tower.
WINSHAM
The Parochial Church Council comprises six members. The choir has eight members. There is a Prayer Group with five members. Members of the church assist with Open the Book in the village school.
